This guidebook for educators?whether professional teachers or home-school parents?focuses on the importance of including mindfulness as part of the curriculum. Mindfulness helps children understand the power of choice, encourages them to recognize their feelings, and increases their ability to stay focused.
Due to our fast-paced society, the impact of social media, and the threat of climate change, today?s children are facing challenges unique to their generation. Incorporating mindfulness as part of their curriculum?whether in a classroom or a home school setting?teaches invaluable life skills that children can apply to all aspects of learning, and later, through all stages of life. Psychologist Amoneeta Beckstein and mindfulness educator and practitioner Jana York have pooled their knowledge and experience and teamed up to compile an eight-week curriculum with empirically based exercises for integrating mindfulness in classrooms, as well as discussion questions for enhancing critical thinking skills. The authors use vowels (including Y for ?You?) as a mnemonic device, with each vowel representing a lesson that helps students develop present-moment awareness: Attention, Experience, Investigate, Observe, and Understand. Forty engaging activities and games help children put into practice the concepts they learned. "Teaching Mindfulness" provides the essential core principles of a mindfulness education and enriches both the teaching and learning experience.
1. Mindfulness is associated with helping students regulate emotions, improve focus, become more relaxed, and feel more creative and confident.
2. The curriculum, designed for kids aged five to eleven-years old, can easily be adapted for younger children or for teens and is compatible to classrooms as well as home school environments.
3. The authors immersed themselves in research focused on adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and children’s need for social-emotional learning (SEL).
4. Author Amoneeta Beckstein is a psychology professor at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and adjunct faculty and clinical supervisor in the counseling psychology graduate program at Assumption University of Thailand. He often integrates mindfulness into his teaching, therapy, and service.
5. Special contributor Jana York is the author of the kid’s book U is for Understanding: Claire’s Journey Towards Mindfulness.
