A funny, sad story about adoption, first love and what really matters in a family.

Fay was adopted when he was a baby and he doesn’t know much about his birth mother — only that she escaped the war in Bosnia. But his new friend Maud is very curious about her. And suddenly Fay is full of questions himself. What is his birth mother like? Why did she give him away? Is it bad to want to find her? And what about Maud, who says smack in the middle of the street that she likes him?

Marjolijn Hof’s first novel, Against the Odds (Een kleine kans), met with high critical acclaim, winning three major Dutch and Flemish children’s book prizes. It was also nominated for the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis and has been translated into twelve languages. Marjolijn lives in Krommenie, the Netherlands.
